It’s autumn in the Var – come and celebrate the chestnut season

It’s one of the unmissable events in the Var in autumn: exploring the Massif des Maures and its chestnut trees decked in pretty orange colours. In Collobrières, the capital of chestnut growing, the Chestnut Festival is celebrated in October in the midst of the harvest season.

Chestnut trees are found everywhere in Collobrières, with almost 1,000 hectares surrounding the town. Long known as the breadfruit – the tree that nourishes – chestnuts are today an essential part of the village’s identity.

Every year, the last three Sundays of October are devoted to celebrating the chestnut, with October 17, 24 and 31 dedicated to this precious autumn fruit.

Foodies should note that the Chestnut Festival is an invitation to discover the chestnut in all its forms: grilled chestnuts, chestnut cream and sugar-coated chestnuts are to be enjoyed to your heart’s content. After all, they’re local and seasonal!

In the heart of the village of Collobrières, at the foot of the Massif des Maures, the festival celebrating the local terroir hosts a large market with 150 artisans, producers and artists. Come and savour a chestnut beer and experience the joy of buying a basket made of chestnut wood…
